In the modern technological world, quite often there are requirements to use non-metallic reinforcing building material. To date, the only option for such reinforcement is composite. The dielectric properties of composite reinforcement allow it to be used in the construction of buildings where it is planned to use complex electronic devices.
Advantages of fiberglass GFRP rebar:
- High tensile strength. Composite is 2.5 times stronger than steel.
- Corrosion resistance. Composite reinforcement is often used in a highly corrosive environment.
- Durability. The service life of composite materials is more than 80 years.
- Radio transparency. Composite rebar is used in the construction projects, where the unhindered penetration of waves of different frequencies is required.
- Low thermal conductivity. This allows to make masonry without “cold bridges”.
- Low weight. Steel reinforcement is 4 times heavier than fiberglass. Thanks to this, the building has a lower weight than structure with metal reinforcement. Also, the construction with the use of fiberglass rebar is much faster.
- Easy transportation. Rods with a diameter of less than 12 mm delivered in reels, so the it can be transported even in a small vehicle.
Use of fiberglass GFRP rebar
The dielectric and antimagnetic properties of composite fiberglass reinforcement allow the use of this material to build the following:
- Medical buildings.
- Airport runways.
- Power plant structures.
- Railroad sleepers.
- Concrete structures (Power lines, traverses).
- Cell towers.
Reinforcement of all these structures is carried out with fiberglass rebar, since they must be protected from possible deformations.
In the United States, composite reinforcement in the construction of medical buildings was already used in the 90s. Basically, a non-metallic reinforcing rod is used for the construction of buildings with X-ray rooms, MRI rooms, as well as rooms for tomography. This is done in order to eliminate the impact of the magnetic fields, that the metal creates, on the results of the research.
Composite fiberglass reinforcement in the construction of power plants is no less popular. Since the special composition of the composite rods makes it a non-conductive material, which means that such rebar will not transmit electromagnetic waves, attract lightning discharges and interfere with the operation of electronic devices that are nearby.
Composite rebar is actively used in the construction of airports. Because of this, a large number of devices that are responsible for transportation safety have an increased protection, and the possibility of negative impact of static electricity and electromagnetic fields is excluded.
All these factors explain the reason why composite reinforcement is used in the construction of military facilities.
