Fiberglass rebar is one of the types of composite rebar that is actively used as a substitution to steel rebar. Composite rebar is used in the construction of buildings, as well as road construction. The use of fiberglass rebar for the road surface reinforcement allows to save on maintenance, increases durability and service life.
Technical characteristics of fiberglass GFRP rebar
The reinforcement of the road surface with composite rebar today has become widespread in many countries of the world. At the same time, the use of metal is being reduced.
Advantages of road surface reinforcement:
- increased water resistance, corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance;
- the coefficient of thermal expansion is the same as that of concrete. Thanks to this, the asphalt does not deteriorate due to sharp temperature fluctuations. This is especially true in countries where the weather is changing drastically. For example, in the United States, about $ 100 billion is allocated each year to restore bridges that were damaged by winter low temperatures, as well as deicing agents;
- high tensile strength. This makes the road surface resistant to cracks and other damage;
- low thermal conductivity. The reinforcement of the concrete pavement provides protection against deformation due to the cold weather.
How the reinforcement of asphalt concrete pavements is done
Reinforcement of the roadway with composite reinforcement could be done during the initial construction as well as during its repair. The use of fiberglass reinforcement in roadway construction does not require the use of additional equipment.
The composite reinforcement material is laid on a dense layer of asphalt, then a layer of asphalt concrete coating is applied on top of it. The leveling layer above the composite bars should be 2 times thicker than the layer below them.
Other stages remain the same as with standard road paving.
How reinforcement of concrete roads is done
For the construction of concrete roads, a factory-made road slab is used. Concrete pavement is often made for the driveway or parking space in the private sector.
The strength of such pavements directly depends on how well the structure was reinforced.
Reinforcement of concrete roads is done in the upper and lower layers of the pavement equally on both sides. The composite material is laid in the formwork with the 20 mm protective layer of concrete.
Why reinforce roadways with fiberglass GFRP rebar
A special technology that uses composite reinforcement, allows strengthening not only the asphalt, but also the earthen base. Therefore, the strengthening of the roadway increases the service life of the structure, saving the cost of repair work.
The construction of roads with the use of composite reinforcement allows to protect the roadway from deformation and fix geogrids on the roadbed. Improved road quality reduces the number of car accidents.
Also, the use of composite reinforcement in the construction of roads allows to reduce the subsidence of the roadbed and trackage.
As you can see, the use of composite reinforcement in road construction has a positive effect on the quality of pavement, durability of use, and also reduces the cost of road repairs.
